| Don Watson |
Don was raised in the
Saginaw Valley of Michigan and left there for a more northerly
clime as soon as he was able. His undergraduate college years
were at NMU at Marquette in the U.P.
When Don turned 18, he hitchhiked to Alaska and ended up moving
there to teach in the Arctic and sub-Arctic at Native villages.
He subsistence hunted, fished and lived a backcountry life.
Don always wanted to live in wilderness environments and teach
Native people and was able to fulfill that dream. He taught
and established new schools in Eskimo villages. While in Alaska,
Don had a dog team that he mushed wherever he was living,
from the high Arctic Brooks Range to the more moderate conditions
of south central Alaska.
Don has always been a paddler since he was a young boy, building
his first canoe at the age of 12. He began kayaking in 1991,
as he wanted to paddle on the ocean and the big waters safely.
Don retired from teaching and moved with his wife Lynn and
3 children to the Keweenaw Peninsula about 7 years ago. He
now guides kayak and dog team trips throughout the Lake Superior
region and trips to Alaska.
Don specializes in multiple day trips and helped the Keweenaw
Adventure Co. develop their multi-day trip program. Don enjoys
time with his family, reading poetry, a variety of northern,
natural history and ecology subjects, biking, XC backcountry
skiing, summer and winter camping and paddling. Don’s skills
as a guide and storyteller, combined with the beauty of the
Lake Superior biosphere, will be sure to make your trip with
Keweenaw Adventure Co. a safe, interesting and awesome experience.
One of Don’s current favorite quotes:
"Yesterday is ashes, tomorrow is wood. Only today
does the fire burn brightly."
