Horseshoe Harbor Paddle

Horseshoe Harbor Paddle – 6 – 6 ½ hours (Full Day)

horseshoe_harbor_kayaker
Travel back in time, delving into local history and geology!

Visit the oldest lighthouse on Lake Superior and the point where Keweenaw Peninsula copper was first discovered by modern man. Learn how the great Copper Boom of the 1800’s was the result of this discovery, speculate about ancient copper mining thousands of years prior and how both have had a profound effect of the history of the world. We’ll paddle on to Horseshoe Harbor and then enjoy lunch at a site the Voyagers once frequented, with a chance to swim in a protected cove. We’ll have more time to explore the shoreline’s gigantic rock formations, ancient fossils and rugged beauty at this Nature Conservancy preserve.

Please note – this area is very exposed and although it’s one of our favorite areas of the Keweenaw, this tour is frequently subject to rescheduling to an alternate location. We will paddle approximately 13 miles on this full day tour and participants must have the physical ability and endurance to complete the route as non-medical evacuations are difficult and time consuming at best.

What do I bring sea kayaking?

To ensure your sea kayak adventure is a good experience, we suggest that you bring the following:

  • A synthetic top such as polyester, polypropylene or capaline. Fleece is great for cooler days or evenings. Cotton should be avoided.
  • Shorts or a swimsuit that a wetsuit can be slipped over.
  • Water-shoes or sandals. Participants can choose to go barefoot if they desire. Shoes with laces are not allowed!
  • Hat for shade when it’s sunny. Cap for warmth if it’s cool.
  • Sunglasses and Sunscreen
  • Drinking Water – a pint is sufficient for most.
  • Camera – take advantage of the many photo opportunities while on ‘da Big Lake!

THE FINE PRINT:

  • Wetsuits will be provided, and use is mandatory because of Lake Superior’s cold water. Drybags are also available for your use, though participants assume their own risk for damaged or lost goods.
  • Weight Limits: There is a minimum of 80lbs and a maximum of 280lbs.
  • Cancellation Policy: Payments are refundable, less a 15% cancellation fee any time prior to 24 hours of the scheduled tour. No refund for cancellations less than 24 hours of the scheduled tour.
  • All tours are subject to rescheduling, alternate destinations or cancellations due to wind, wave or other unfavorable weather conditions. While we will try to reschedule, full payments will be refunded in the event of tour cancellations due to unfavorable paddling conditions.
  • Rain, fog or cool weather does not necessarily cancel a trip… customers find paddling in the rain more enjoyable then they thought, since they are well protected from the elements by the kayak, spray skirt, wetsuit, lifejacket, rain jacket and hat and generate body heat as they paddle. We will not venture out in  a heavy down pour or if thunderstorms are present.
  • Gratuities for your trip leaders are at your discretion.
