| Preparing
for a wet exit |
This 3 hour course teaches
the basics of kayak safety and efficiency and will help to
develop your personal kayaking skills. Whether you are
a beginner with a deisre to learn, or an expereinced paddler
wanting to refresh some techniques for the season, this course
will help you get to the next level. This 'hands on'
course is taught by one of our ACA (American Canoe Association)
Certified Instructors.
The course will begin
with an orientation to kayak nomenclature and equipment,
including establishing a good "boat fit". It will
progress with some of the primary skills, including the
"J-lean" and "hip snap" development.
We will introduce the various paddle strokes including propulsion,
manuvering, and the recovery strokes. We will teach
rescues including: "the wet exit", ""T-rescue",
and "paddle float re-entry ". The course also
highlights safety considerations and preparations for paddling
on Lake Superior, including hypothermia, wind & waves
and their effect on paddlers, shoreline dynamics and signalling.

Successful completion
of this course is a requirement prior to renting our equipment
for self guided adventures. (We will also honor having successfully
completed a similar Water Safety Course as ours within the
past 3 years with a documentation signed by another ACA
Certified Instructor).
