Sam Mowrer was born in Southern
California but grew up in Wisconsin where he fueled his passion
for the outdoors with biking, skiing, kayaking, canoeing,
and sailing. His very first outdoor experiences were sailing
expeditions on the Pacific Ocean with his Dad in a 22 foot
West White Potter boat. After moving to Wisconsin, Sam and
his dad toured the Apostle Islands on a sailboat. After the
sailboat was gone, Sam and his dad turned to mountain biking
as another way to bond in the outdoors. Sam remembers the
days still when he would get so frustrated that his dad was
faster than him but the tables soon turned. He decided to
do a 24 hour single-speed solo at the age of 16. After 17
straight hours on a bike and 140 miles of single track on
the brain he tried to take a nap…and didn’t wake
up until after the race was over. Shortly after, Sam’s
little brother really got into mountain biking and is now
almost as fast as his brother. Since his whole family loves
mountain biking, kayaking, and the outdoors, it makes it easy
for Sam to love them too.
After
having all of his fun growing up in the outdoors and working
in a bike shop for 5 years, Sam decided to attend Northern
Michigan University pursuing a major in Outdoor Recreation.
He learned about Copper Harbor while mountain biking here
with his dad and brother for the Memorial Day “Ride
the Keweenaw” event. Immediately falling in love with
Copper Harbor, he knew this is where he wanted to be.
Sam
is certified in Wilderness First Aid and is seeking his ACA
certification in the fall. He’s looking forward to seeing
you up here, matching your smile with one of his own.
