Joey Wolford

Meet Joey – Senior Sea Kayak Guide

Joey grew up in a rural area just north of Green Bay, Wisconsin. During his free time as a kid he grew up tramping around the woods enthralled with the beauty of nature! From a young age, Joey was either playing in the water, woods, or snow. Growing up, Joey was a part of the Boy Scouts for many years taking numerous backpacking, canoeing, and camping trips. Working at a Boy Scout camp in Mountain, Wisconsin, as a lifeguard and teaching life long skills such as swimming, lifesaving, sailing, canoeing and kayaking, Joey started to cement his love for the outdoors and particularly the water! It was through these activities that he realized that a cubicle would not be in his future as he enjoyed being outdoors, teaching, and being a leader!

With the shadow of choosing a career path or post high school education loomed closer, Joey decided to go to Northern Michigan University to study Outdoor Recreation Leadership and Management. Here he learned leadership and management techniques, interpretation, risk management, as well as a plethora of other skills that he uses daily while working or having fun.

During college, Joey worked as an outdoor guide at Mount Bohemia in the Keweenaw Peninsula guiding sea kayak trips on Lake Superior, hiking tours, and mountain bike tours on the local trails. In search of more adventure and exploring the unknown, Joey decided to move to Akaroa, New Zealand to guide kayak tours on the Banks Peninsula.

During his free time Joey can be found playing outside surfing, climbing, mountain biking, kayaking, skiing, hiking, camping, enjoying a beer looking at a beautiful sunset, or anything else that gets him out in nature! Joey is stoked to Join the KAC pack, back in the beautiful Keweenaw Peninsula sharing his passion of kayaking and biking with whomever he encounters!
