Meet Missy – Isle Royale Guide
I am a Minnesota native with a love for nature and all things paddling. I grew up camping, canoeing, and hiking all along Minnesota’s north shore of Lake Superior with my family, and from an early age Lady Superior has made a lasting impression on me. I am naturally drawn to water, and as a former collegiate rower, kayaking seemed to be a natural progression for me upon graduation. While I also love canoeing, packrafting, and stand up paddle boarding, sea kayaking is my first love.
I have spent extensive time paddling in Alaska, on Lake Superior, within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, and within a number of Minnesota’s other 10,000 lakes. When I’m not on the water or kicking up dirt on the trail, you can find me in the classroom. I am not only a PhD student, but also a faculty member at a community college in Minnesota. For the last 16 years I have been teaching exercise science and outdoor education courses at North Hennepin Community College. I also spend my summers working for the local park district where I teach paddling skills, adaptive paddling, and work outreach with various veterans paddling programs.
My first time visiting Isle Royale was with Keweenaw Adventure Company! I couldn’t help but be drawn to the friendliness of Sam and Shelby and the Copper Harbor community, and I absolutely fell in love with the beauty and serenity the island offers. Isle Royale is a place that will stay with you long after your trip ends. I am excited to share the island with you as your guide, and look forward to a trip filled with unforgettable memories, conversations, food, and scenery!
